A state commission will propose that the length of social insurance contributions should be up to forty years duration to qualify for a full “state” pension, This is up from the present ten years contributions so it is quiet a hike really,
They also want to raise the pension age to 67 from 65. It must be a pretty nasty bunch this commission, their proposals are anti people, designed to catch the poorest (who have no private pension) and leave them with nothing. It is really work till you die for alot of people, people who will not qualify for the 40 year contributions -stay at home mums, self employed, people with bouts of unemployment, people who studied a lot all will be caught under these proposals.
Maybe they should concentrate on the civil service there pensions cost the most. No fear of that is there ?
It is reported that the Irish Congress of Trade unions has already rejected these proposals. It shows the real nasty side of FF/FG Tories who give tax cuts to the rich and turn the screws on the poor . This commissions report must be sent to the recycle bin as it is meant to increase poverty and worsen conditions for ordinary people. Reject this !
On the news of late is ex minster and ex td Katherine Zappone, firstly she made the news with her party at Merrion Hotel contravening Co vid regulations and next her appointment to the UN as “special envoy”. Apparently no vacancy existed, none was advertised and is a made up post to suit Miss Zappone whims and fancy. Would we all have a cushy number such as this, lots of travel and meetings and no real work really. It seems the job didn’t pay that well according to the irish times it only paid €15,000 and was of 60 days duration, thats the Irish times version of it anyway.
The appointment (now declined) smacks of cronyism and jobs for the boys/girls mentality. We have alot of this mentality in Irish government and have a civil service full of people who have this feeling of entitlement. The Government and Rich people tell ordinary folk that they are entitled to nothing and the “World doesn’t owe anyone a living ” while they plunder and steal. Governments appointing their supporters to state jobs is nothing new and all political parties do it if they get the chance, These practices block suitable people from taking up positions on merit, The Government departments are mismanaged, cost too much and are a burden on ordinary people.
Well that’s it for another year, the Summer was so so. A few sunny Days in the month of July about 10 in all and that’s the summer. Well i suppose it wasn’t a complete washup in comparison to the Summer other countries got, heatwaves and floods so i suppose we better count ourselves lucky.
A recent report by the United Nations says we have possibly done irreversible damage to the balance of nature and will take thousands of years to undo. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. I guess that’s peoples lifestyle will have to become more environment friendly and cut down on toxic emissions but will they really do it ? Lip service is cheap and doesn’t cost anything but the weather chaos can’t be wished away. So what must be done ? A cut in the absolute huge number of humans must happen, two children is enough for any couple. certainly there’s no good jobs for massive populations and all the children they have. What’s the Solution here ? I don’t think anyone knows.
Just one thing that happened a few months ago whilst going to my car in said carpark. I bought a number of things from the deli in the Eurospar in Rathkeale including one baked potato which slipped from my grip. Hey Presto it makes a mess on the ground which looks like I will have to clean up but to my surprise a group of crows descend and tidy up the mess by eating the baked potato on the ground and saves me the work of having to clean up. I put the bag in the bin . Nature will clean up a lot i think .
Wishing all my readers a happy and safe Christmas, 2020 was a year that will be know for the Corona virus and the measures they took to prevent it. Christmas 2020 will be different too. alot of pubs are shut and another lockdown is predicated for the New Year.
Was watching TV3/Virgin Media one last Saturday and the program that was on was some English import – catchphrase i think and I felt like I was watching a English tv station rather than a Irish one. I remember when initially watching English tv stations they felt different than to watching a Irish one . Everything on Irish tv stations is nearly English or American and feel that Irish culture is being overshadowed somewhat and that we are raising a generation of “West Brits” or people who feel that English culture is superior to Irish culture. Irish tv stations don’t make enough “home produced” dramas, comedies, documentaries to fill the needs of the country and just buy in English dramas and films cheaply. Comedies from RTE are notoriously not funny at all and TV3/Virgin Media don’t make very much Something should be done to rectify this, more state Grants for Irish productions, quotas for Irish productions on Irish tv, so to stop the tv stations from looking like a ITV channel in England. Culture overshadowing i don’t think is good for Ireland and for Irish identity in the world.
There has been a lot of talk about a Paul Quinn (deceased) of South Armagh as Miriam O’ Callaghan asked Mary Lou McDonald in Tuesday night’s debate. It involved remarks being made by a Conor Murphy of Sinn fein some 12/13 years ago. He apparently made some comment that Mr Quinn (deceased) was involved in fuel smuggling and other racketeering. This hurt the Quinn family and they demanded a apology (and got) from Mr Murphy.
That doesn’t seem to be the end of it. I am not familiar with the circumstances of the killing of Mr Quinn(the provos denied killing him at the time) but it seems to construed to derail Sinn fein election hopes at the last hour. Mi5 must be working overtime to keep Sinn fein out and they are joined by Fianna fail who are desperate for power. London doesn’t countenance a United Ireland anything soon and it is always kept off the agenda in the so called “South”.
As to the unfair debate on RTE, when was it acceptable that a sister of a Fianna Fail candidate was doing the interviewing. This showed unbelievable bias in the case of a election debate. Miss O’ Callaghan didn’t ask Michael Martin about Terence Wheelock and his so called alleged suicide in Garda Custody. Other facts are that they are supposed sixty unexplained deaths in Garda custody though I can’t reference them at the moment . Miss O’Callaghan is sure to leave them out somehow.
Totally Biased media which is enough to make you puke.
Shows the shockingly state of journalism in the country.
You seen all the news on tv and in the newspapers and there is no escaping the fact that the conservatives in England have been re-elected . Its bad news for Ireland and any rethink on Brexit is firmly put to bed now, with a lot of remainers actually losing their seats. The sun never set on the British empire or so a lot of English people think – they re-elected the Tories with a even bigger majority shows you what a “shower of bastards” they are. The Tory government will work hard to ignore calls for a unity referendum in Ireland and a independence referendum in Scotland. They will ensure that Sinn fein doesn’t get into government in the “South” of Ireland and will put more obstacles in the way of Irish unity. Possible future trade deals will see Ireland lose their share of British agricultural markets, time will tell for sure. Boris Johnson has a big a majority as Margaret Thatcher so there is very little way of stopping him. Five more years of Tory England is on the cards , not good for anyone except the English.
Just noticed this on journalist Michael O’Regan (of the Irish Times) twitter feed about the Anglo – Irish treaty of 1921 was more or less forced through by the British, who had intimidated the Irish delegates into signing the Treaty.
This treaty split Ireland into two states, one with limited independence and another still tied to the British state.
It suited only the British who supplied the Pro-treaty side with money and arms which resulted in the Pro-treaty side winning the subsequent civil war. This is a turning point in Irish history, Collins and Griffith had accepted a lot less than Irish freedom and had buckled under pressure from the British government. This could be said to be “What if ” if Collins and Griffith had held their nerve and refused to split the country what would Ireland be like now ? Maybe a lot less immigration to Britain and the USA and not so reactionary/church ridden past.
Its all a case of “What if ” and maybe but Collins and Griffith should have been prepared to stand together and fight the British rather than risk a civil war in Ireland. Its a case of the wrong decision being made and the effects of which touch us till this very day.
